About the BMW X4

Style and performance are what the X4 is all about. The sloping, coupe-like roofline and athletic styling communicate the sporting intentions imbued in the X4 by BMW. Whether you select the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder option or the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, you’ll be getting ample power and serious handling ability. All-wheel drive comes standard, and a suite of advanced safety features help you out on the road. Large 19-inch wheels come standard, but BMW also offers a wide selection of options up to 21 inches, so you can find a set of wheels that’s just right for you. Optional M Sport brakes with blue painted calipers will not only help you stop quickly, but also catch the eye.

What the Critics Say

As with most BMW models, the driving experience is one of the highlights of the X4. A lineup of muscular engines mated to a well-tuned chassis with standard M Sport suspension makes for a more exciting drive than the average SUV.” — Kelley Blue Book
The X4’s potent engines and impressive handling dynamics back up its sporty looks, something that’s not usually the case with sporty-looking SUVs. Light off-roading is possible thanks to the standard all-wheel-drive system.” — Edmunds

What’s New for 2025

Just two changes of note for 2025. The first is that heated seats are now standard across the whole X4 lineup. The other is that the Convenience and Premium packages now both include remote start.

BMW X4 Features

BMW X4 M40i

Athletic Style

Mechanically, the X4 is closely related to the X3. But what sets it apart from its stablemate is the styling. No ordinary grocery-getter, the X4 offers a sloping coupe-style roofline that immediately communicates a more performance-oriented sense of purpose. A mesh kidney grille further sets it apart from the more mainstream X3, as well as most of the rest of the BMW lineup. Full LED adaptive headlights and three-dimensional taillights add to the flair of the exterior styling. A number of M Sport styling options are available too, including the Shadowline package, which gives you a set of Midnight Grey wheels and black exterior trim. Inside you’ll find 4 different Sensatec upholstery options, as well as 5 different options in Vernasca leather. You have a choice of different wood and aluminum interior accents, and if you select the M40i trim, you can also select carbon fiber accents.

BMW I6 Engine

Serious Performance

The base 2.0-liter engine produces 248 horsepower and will propel the X4 to 60mph in just 6 seconds flat. This is quick by any standards, and it sets the X4 apart in its segment. But BMW has an option for those who crave some additional power. This is the 3.0-liter turbocharged TwinPower I6 engine, coupled to a mild hybrid system, which together produce 382 horsepower. This brings the 0-60 time down to 4.4 seconds, and comes with a trim level that also offers M Sport brakes and Adaptive M Suspension. Both trims come with Driving Dynamics Control, which allows you to select Eco Pro, Comfort, or Sport modes. And the 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission comes with Sport and Manual shift modes, as well as Launch Control.

BMW X4 iDrive 7

Advanced Technology

You get a lot more as standard with the X4 than you might be used to. And nowhere is this more obvious than the long list of high-tech features. Some of the first things you’ll notice when you sit in the car are the Digital Instrument Cluster and large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. You get Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility and a HiFi sound system with a 205-watt amplifier and 12 speakers. This is connected to BMW’s iDrive 7 operating system, which also comes with BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which handles voice commands. Handling is improved by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which comes with Brake Drying, Brake Stand-by, Start-off Assistant and Brake Fade Compensation.

BMW X4

Class-Leading Safety

Along with the rest of the technology that BMW offers as standard on the X4, there is an impressive amount of safety tech that will help you feel more secure behind the wheel. This includes Active Driving Assistant, which comes with Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Speed Limit Info. There are adaptive full-LED headlights that have a programmable daytime running light feature. To supplement the rear-view camera, there are front and rear park distance sensors as standard. Should you get into an accident, an impact sensor will disconnect the alternator, fuel pump and starter, then unlock all the doors and turn on the hazards and interior lights.
