BMW M5

About the BMW M5

The original BMW M5 was the second car produced by BMW’s M division, and it was created by taking the engine from the first car, the M1 supercar, and putting it into the 5-Series sedan. BMW just recently launched its second-ever M-exclusive model, the XM, and in keeping with tradition, the newly redesigned M5 gets an updated and more powerful version of the M Hybrid drivetrain found in the XM. This is a plug-in hybrid system that produces a total of 717 horsepower, and lets you choose between all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive on the fly. It can even travel 25 miles on electric power alone. The M5 is also now available in the usual Sedan body style, but also with a Touring wagon body. It’s the most powerful M5 ever, and when it comes to the M5, that’s really saying something.

What the Critics Say

On the fairy-tale roads of the Black Forest, only a troll could scoff at the M5’s incredible elasticity of power. The electric motor fills every gap in the ICE armor. The full 738 lb-ft is available anywhere from 1,800 to 5,400 rpm. The peak 717 horses are yours between 5,600 and 6,500 rpm, with a fierce 7,200-rpm redline. Mash the throttle in fourth gear at 50 mph, count just past two seconds, and the M5 is now traveling 75 mph. My, where have those other cars gone?” — The Drive

The result is astounding. The M5’s steering is fantastically reactive, the car changing direction instantaneously and staying so flat it seems to live in a 2D world. There is no lateral or longitudinal load transfer, there is no perceptible body roll, there are not four distinct contact patches to manage and balance. There is simply the center of mass, and the world pivots around it.” — MotorTrend

What’s New for 2025

The M5 got a total redesign for 2025, and while this always brings some major changes with it, this generation sets itself apart from the previous one in a couple of important ways. It’s not just more powerful, it has 117 more horsepower and 185 lb-ft more torque than the outgoing model. That’s thanks to a major change in the drivetrain, the addition of the M Hybrid plug-in hybrid system. The other big change is that the M5 is now available as a wagon, in the form of the M5 Touring. You can still have the sedan if you prefer, but having a choice is a big deal, and something the US market rarely gets.

 BMW M5 Features

BMW M5 M Hybrid

M Hybrid Power

The M5 is the second model to get the M Hybrid drivetrain, but BMW gave the M5 even more power than the XM, and here it produces a massive 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels by default, but you can send power to just the rear wheels if you prefer the feel of a RWD setup. The M5 can travel up to 25 miles on an electric charge, but the system’s real strength is in how it compliments the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood. Maximum power is available across a huge cross-section of the rev range, so the M5 isn’t just quick in a straight line, but also powering out of turns and other situations that require quick pedal work. The M5 also has an especially low center of gravity, especially with the available carbon fiber roof, and when paired with the standard Adaptive M suspension, the handling is otherworldly. Stopping is impressively quick too, with either the massive standard brakes or the available carbon ceramic setup.

BMW M5

Striking Design

The M5 might be based on the mainstream 5 Series, but nobody is going to confuse the two. To accommodate the bigger 20”/21” M-specific wheels needed to handle all of that power, the M5 has flared wheel arches that immediately announce the sort of power on tap. Move around to the back and you’ll find a two-section diffuser framing the quad exhaust finishers, and both Sedan and Touring models have a lip spoiler perched above. The big styling news for this generation of the M5 has been the introduction of the M54 Touring. This wagon-bodied model is perfect for performance enthusiasts who want more cargo space, but don’t want the higher center of gravity that comes with an SUV. And of course, it comes with a power tailgate. The two versions are essentially identical in all other respects. Other touches that set the M5 apart include available carbon fiber mirror caps and BMW Iconic Glow Kidney Grille with contour lighting.ce.

BMW M5 Interior

Luxury Interior

Although the M5 is made with performance in mind, it’s still part of the 5 Series family, and therefore maintains a high standard of luxury. Many of the features that are optional on the mainstream 5 Series come standard on the M5, so you get things like Extended Merino Leather upholstery, 4-zone automatic climate control, and a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System. But there are a lot of M-specific touches as well, such as the red start-stop button, the M iDrive Controller, the flat-bottom steering wheel, and of course, the power adjustable sport seats. The M5 has the same BMW Curved Display with configurable 12.3″ instrument cluster and 14.9″ central information display as the rest of the 5 Series lineup, but here it has an M-specific version of the BMW Operating System 8.5, which includes M functions for both screens as well as the standard head-up display.
