Open-Top Performance

The Z4 is a classic roadster, featuring a long hood, short deck, and is only available as a convertible. It’s light, and the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, is more than enough to give it some serious pep. Although hard acceleration isn’t really the point of a roadster, this standard engine will still deliver an impressive 5.2-second 0-60 time. If you’re looking for more of a hardcore sports car experience, there is an available 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine that produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which shaves a full second off the 0-60 time. While the standard 8-speed automatic transmission delivers quick shifts and paddle shifters allow you to select your own gears, the six-cylinder engine is also available with a six-speed three-pedal manual transmission. Since, for those who prefer a manual transmission, there is no substitute.

The Z4 has a trunk with 9.9 cubic feet of space, a truly surprising amount of space for a two-seat convertible. This is a reflection of the effort that BMW put into making this more than a fun little around-town runabout. The Z4 has all of that luggage space so that it can serve as a road trip car as well, and that means it needs a comfortable interior for watching the miles melt away. There might only be two seats, but they’re spacious, quite probably offering more legroom than you get in the front seats of whatever SUV you’re using to pick up the kids from school. The SensaTec upholstery is both durable and soft to the touch, and a hi-fi sound system comes standard. The seats are heated, too, and there is an available heated steering wheel, so a little bit of a nip to the air won’t keep you from enjoying some top-down driving.

The advanced technology in the Z4 fine-tunes the experience to deliver maximum enjoyment. This includes features like sport-tuned suspension with twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers. There is also available Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled dampers, an advanced setup that maximizes handling without sacrificing comfort. This pairs nicely with the Driving Dynamics Control, which lets you choose ECO PRO, COMFORT, or SPORT driving modes, depending on what the situation demands. A 10.3-inch touchscreen gives you access to all sorts of connected features, like streaming music, weather information (important when you have the roof down), or navigation. There is even adaptive cruise control to make your open-air highway cruising an even more relaxing experience.
