2025 BMW 3 Series vs. BMW 5 Series Comparison

BMW sedans are legendary for their superb driving dynamics and luxurious interiors. While it’s plain what sets these sedans apart from the competition, it might not be totally clear what sets them apart from one another. This is especially true of the 3-Series and 5-Series sedans, two nameplates that have been around for decades, each evolving through many generations along the way. There’s a lot that these two sedans have in common, such as superior handling and advanced technology. There are differences nonetheless and that’s why Sewickley BMW has put together this guide to help you understand what these are.

As you can see, the BMW 330i and 530i have the same power output, coming from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The 3 Series, being just a tad smaller and lighter, can hit 60 MPH almost half a second quicker than the larger 5 Series sedan. Size is therefore an important difference between these two, and since the 5-Series is more than a foot longer, it’s a pretty easy difference to spot when the two are parked next to each other. The styling of the two is otherwise similar, clearly drawing from the same design language. It’s striking and bold, accented by touches like LED lighting and the signature kidney grille.
Of course, these are the base models we’re comparing and other powertrain options are available. With the 3 Series, there is the M340i which bumps power up to 382 horsepower thanks to a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Then there is the 503-horsepower M3, the leading name in compact performance sedans. In a similar fashion, the 5 Series range boasts the high-octane 717-horsepower M5 and the electrified 550e plug-in hybrid.

56 inches / 54.6 inches | Shoulder Room (front / rear) | 59.2 inches / 56.9 inches |
Size is once again a factor in differentiating these two models from each other. Turning our attention to the interiors of both models, the difference in size is evident again. Styling is once again similar, although there are certainly some differences that are easy to spot, like the concealed HVAC vents in the 5 Series. Both use the same Curved Display hardware, consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that flows seamlessly into a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The stereo systems are similar, with both using a 205-watt digital amplifier. One key difference is the fact that the 5 Series comes with 12 speakers while the 3 Series comes with just 10.
The 3 Series comes with a large moonroof as standard. It’s not as large as the full-glass Sky Lounge Roof available on the 5 Series, but that is an option, rather than standard. Speaking of glass, only the 5 Series has the option of glass controls, specifically the Start/Stop button, iDrive controller, and rocker switch for gear selection.
