BMW X5

About the BMW X5

Since its inception, the BMW X5 has always been a crowd pleaser and a complete redesign has given this longtime favorite even more of what made it great in the first place. The X5 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that produces a robust 375 horsepower. That’s enough power to make the X5 feel plenty peppy but those craving more power can opt for the available 4.4-liter V8 and its 523 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid drivetrain is available as well and to give it the attention it deserves, we’ve reviewed the X5 PHEV model separately.

For those who want more seating, there is an optional third row of seats inside the X5. Or you can go for the extra cargo space instead, an impressive 33.9 cubic feet behind the 2nd row. The tech in the X5 is attention-grabbing. There’s simply no missing the 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and the available 20-speaker, 1,500-watt Bowers & Wilkins® Diamond Surround Sound System delivers otherworldly sound quality.

What the Critics Say

The SUV’s cabin is lined with premium materials and, like other BMWs, includes cleverly integrated technology features like a slick-looking curved digital display that stretches nearly the length of the dashboard. This approach results in a luxury SUV so well-rounded that its few shortcomings are easily overlooked, and the X5 remains one of our favorite mid-size crossovers.“ — Car & Driver

“How comfortable is the X5? It might be class-leading in its performance metrics, but that doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. The X5 is so composed, quiet and comfortable it almost surprises you on the road. Think of the X5 as your palace from the outside world.” – Edmunds

What’s New for 2026

While it remains a standout choice among the impressive BMW family of luxury SUVs, the X5 receives no changes or updates for the 2026 model year. Following a recent redesign just two years ago, the X5 continues to deliver its signature blend of prestige, performance, and premium comfort features. BMW X5 Features

BMW X5 Styling

STRIKING STYLE

The styling of the BMW X5 manages to be fresh and modern without being divisive. The trademark kidney grille is prominent without being overbearing like so many competing luxury SUVs. 20-inch wheels come standard and 22-inch wheels are available on all trims. For a little extra flair, you can get brake calipers painted in either blue or red. The LED daytime running lights are arrow-shaped and are used as indicators when you signal a turn. Chrome accents highlight the exterior while the available Shadowline packages give you the option to make some or all of these black instead. Chrome exhaust tips are standard but you can set your X5 apart from the pack a bit with the available illuminated kidney grille or aluminum running boards.

BMW X5 Performance

POWER & PERFORMANCE

No matter which variant you select, the BMW X5 offers plenty of power and capability to conquer whatever challenge stands in your way. A standard 3.0-liter straight-six engine cranks out 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque for a perfect balance of response and efficiency. Conquer whatever Mother Nature throws at you with standard xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive for stability and surefootedness across the entire spectrum of weather conditions. The end result of extensive development, the X5 M60i comes standard with a 523-horsepower 4.4L 8-cylinder engine which can rocket from 0-60 in just 4.1 seconds. Now with sportier shift characteristics, an eight-speed Steptronic transmission is found on every BMW X5. Boost the efficiency, sportiness, or comfort of your drive with an array of chassis systems available in the BMW X5.

BMW X5 Interior

REFINED CABIN

Shifting our attention towards the interior of the X5, BMW engineers placed emphasis on creating a sense of spaciousness and ambiance through the use of sweeping horizontal lines throughout the cabin. Premium material found in the interior includes Merino leather trim, offered in four colors, with additional colors offered in Sensafin, and all of them offering ventilation functions. Selecting an M Sport X5 model will get you exclusive interior trim materials like carbon fiber accents, Piano Black trim, and an anthracite headliner. For a true audiophile-caliber experience, the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System features 20 speakers and a 1,500-watt output. Remote engine start along with heated and cooled cup holders in the center console are just two further examples of luxurious amenities found inside the BMW X5.

BMW X5 Technology

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

As the eighth generation of the BMW iDrive Operating System, the BMW Curved Display includes a high-resolution digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch center display joined together in one continuous curved line. This system offers noticeable improvements such as haptic controls on the iDrive controller, stunning visualizations, and the largest-sized displays in a BMW to date. Features of the standard Connected Package Professional include Real Time Traffic Information, On-street Parking Information, Concierge Services, and Remote Services for unparalleled connectivity inside the BMW X5. Standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility give the big display even greater functionality.
